you're always the best with those pep talks, you know that
[ don't worry it was just a little sip. most of it was whipped cream. no loss, right? at least he's on Sam's block now and strolling up to the door within minutes so Sam can stop being a coffee prude. ]
and hush, most of the whipped cream is still there. Bucky's making his way inside the house soon enough, kicking off his shoes and heading over to the kitchen - smells awesome. the bagels and coffee get set on the counter, so Bucky can stroll up behind Sam at the stove, sliding his arms around his waist and resting his forehead against the back of his neck. ]
He glances over his shoulder when he hears Bucky coming in and grins at him, phone on the counter and spatula in hand. Sam turns back to the stove to keep an eye on the pan, not jumping at all when there's suddenly a warm, solid body pressed up behind him and strong arms around his waist.
He hums, leaning back just a little, trusting Bucky to hold his weight up. ]
So I really don't have to worry about a cop knocking at my door later today?
[ tempting as it is to sink to the kitchen floor in a cuddle pile, Bucky does indeed support Sam's weight as he leans back against him - cuddles are nice, but food first then cuddles is better. and food not on the floor is much better.
it helps that he's very comfortable here too. it's easy to block out other noises and unwelcome thoughts because he can just breathe in, feel Sam's warmth and breathing under his hand, and forget about whatever's bothering him. today is a good day, and there's a determination there to not let anything ruin that.
which includes keeping the previous night's activities under wraps as best he can. he hates worrying Sam, and their definitions of bad tend to differ from time to time. ]
Not even a lil' bit. I was on my best behaviour and everything.
[ Okay, so, now that Bucky's here and Sam can see for himself how he's doing, it definitely looks like it's not time to push the subject. Bucky seems worn out, not necessarily stretched thin, but close. Sam can try asking again later, when they're both more relaxed and settled after more cuddling and a good meal.
Instead, he turns his head a little so he can nuzzle at Bucky's jaw, planting a quick kiss there before turning back to the pan to make sure he doesn't burn anything. ]
Okay, good. [ That's the most he'll say about it for now. ] Glad you managed to get here okay. How's that coffee taste? Worth heading back to the cafe for?
[ it's not the worst. Bucky's had worse days, even worse nights, but progress has been a steady thing and with Sam's neverending support, he's managed his recovery - and his temper - a lot better lately. but there are still incidents, like the previous night, and though it really wasn't as bad as it could've been, Bucky doesn't want Sam fretting or getting upset over his (for lack of a better word,) bar tantrums.
this is much better. Sam smiling, Sam leaning against him, Sam nuzzling and kissing him. much better than Sam rolling his eyes, Sam scolding him, Sam cutting him off from pancakes until he smartens up. ]
I'd say so. [ Bucky keeps his eyes closed for the time being, as if he was perfectly content with life in that moment. which, he was. his right hand slips under the material of Sam's shirt to rest on his waist, slowly brushing his thumb across his hip as he listens to breakfast cooking. ] They forgot the whipped cream on yours, though. I didn't notice 'til I got here.
[ Sam's a firm believer of positive reinforcement. Nothing will really come from him telling Bucky off or withholding the good stuff from him except making them both miserable and tense.
Right now, Bucky needs a safe harbor to return to when things get to be a little too much for him (as they still do from time to time), and that's what Sam does his best to provide. Even if that doesn't always necessarily go as planned because while Sam is pretty level-headed, he doesn't always have enough patience when he ought to.
He hums, trying not to get distracted by just how warm Bucky is behind him and by the hand sneaking under his shirt. He glances back up to Bucky, raises an eyebrow and twists so he can carefully wipe away a bit of cream from the corner of Bucky's mouth before licking it off his thumb. ]
Uh-huh. I can totally see they forgot it. [ He shakes his head in amusement before dropping a quick kiss to his lips to show he doesn't mind so much. ]
[ it's funny to note that when most couples talk about withholding the good stuff, they aren't talking about pancakes.
but Bucky's glad that's all okay with Sam. he deals with so much of Bucky's issues and other shit, and he knows it gets to a point somedays where Sam has to step back and have his own space for a bit. the bad days have been lesser of late, but they're still bad days, and Bucky knows he's more than a handful even on a good day. Sam's always there, though. he definitely deserves better, but Bucky's too selfish to push him onto someone else.
-- okay, a little slip-up with the whipped cream there. it catches Bucky off guard for a second (whoops, how did he not notice it?) but he recovers quickly and scoffs. after that kiss, of course. never scoff during smooches. ]
Wow. That was from mine. [ which it might've been? he had a lot of whipped cream on his, when he first ordered it. there's definitely none left now. ] Way to make assumptions, pal.
[ but it's okay, Bucky forgives him. and bury his face against Sam's shoulder because he really didn't mean to steal Sam's whipped cream, but he's going with his excuse while he can. ]
[ Whether it's pancakes or sex, that's just the way Sam rolls. He hasn't heard Bucky complain about it just yet.
To be fair to Bucky, they both have their bad days. Sam's far from perfect and there are times when he's just got to take a step back and spend a bit of time for himself. While those days are nowhere near as bad as Bucky's can be, Sam knows they just have to be patient with each other and work things out like adults.
He lets Bucky scoff quietly and try to talk his way out of the whipped cream fiasco, chuckling quietly as the other man hides his face against the junction of Sam's neck and shoulder. Sam doesn't quite have the heart to point out the traces of whipped cream on the cover of his coffee cup, so he might as well let Bucky off easy. ]
Hmm, my bad I guess. Just make sure they don't forget next time, okay?
[ His hands keep working steadily away at their breakfast, even as he savors this quiet moment between them. He nudges Bucky gently. ]
Grab my coffee for me so I can take a sip, would you?

[ don't mind him if he practices his sad puppy look on the way. ]

No run ins with the police on the way here?

not a one. aren't you proud of me

Got to admit, I'm impressed. [ Even if pitting your run of the mill cops against an ex-super-assassin isn't exactly fair. ]
I still wish you were as good a dodging trouble as you are when dodging cops.
[ IT HAD TO BE SAID, OKAY. ]

one step at a time big guy, i ain't a miracle worker here
[ just for that he's taking a sip of Sam's coffee. take that. ]

I have faith in your abilities, lover boy. You'll get there eventually.
[ And Sam will be there to bail his ass out in the meantime when needed.
Also, hdu defile the sanctity of his coffee, you're lucky you're cute, Barnes. ]

Well, I do get a lot of practice for those. :)
[ You fiend, not the whipped cream!
You're lucky he loves you, too, because he's frying up some bacon and scrambled eggs to go with the rest of their breakfast because protein. ]

Steve giving you trouble again huh
