[He'd actually hoped to avoid this conversation if possible, and he'd thought (hoped) that TJ wouldn't think to bring it up as their relationship is... it's complicated, cliche as it might sound. TJ isn't the kind of person who does dating, has made it abundantly clear that this thing they do, where they meet up on occasion and sleep together, isn't serious, isn't an actual relationship.
It's actually part of the reason why Sam hadn't bothered calling him to fill him in after Project Insight and after Sam up and followed Steve to help him track down Bucky. He had just figured that TJ wouldn't care since Sam is... well, expendable in the greater scheme of his life. Or so he keeps insisting.
Sam understands. He's learned enough of psychology in his time at the VA to see where TJ is coming from and why he acts the way he does (god knows the topic has come up often enough in the media as well, over the years), but it doesn't mean it lessens the hurt.
His family and friends, those who know about his on-again, off-again not-relationship with the former first son, have advised him time and again to just break it off, especially after yet another story of how TJ's been caught by the media with this other guy or another gets out. Sometimes, Sam wishes he could, but it's nice to pretend he and TJ have something more than great chemistry and great sex. Even if he wishes TJ would let them be something more, it's difficult to keep away.
There's a pregnant pause during which Sam goes through possible options on what to say in his mind before deciding he's got nothing else to lose. With a self-deprecating smile, he shrugs.]
I wasn't sure if you'd be interested about it, honestly.
sorry this took long :c
